Going Green: Energy Alternative Choices For Your Home

Two major concerns are in the center of everyone's attention when it comes to talking about energy sources these days. The first would be the rising prices of power. The second, but certainly not of lesser importance, is the environmental issue. Climate change and global warming have greatly affected power consumption on a worldwide scale, and its effects on our weather have been felt by everyone wherever they are and whatever the season.

More and more families are turning to energy alternative choices to fully power or augment their power for the household. People are trying to make their homes less reliant on the usual energy sources and looking at more environmental and cost-cutting ways to sustain their lifestyles. The benefits to using renewable energy are considerable. Aside from the environmental aspect, it gives homeowners energy independence and also raises the value of your property. Energy production is clean, quiet and free. There are a number of options for those who are looking for sustainable and renewable energy. Choosing the right one depends on your home's location and available resources.

1. Solar

The most common energy alternative is solar power. Solar panels are widely available these days and are probably the most convenient solution to install in a home. Sunshine is readily available for those who get a lot of sun year-round, but is still sustainable even in the winter months. The most common installation in homes is a solar water heating system. Some homes also install a solar electricity system, which can sustain homes totally, or still be connected to a grid to minimize electric bills. Some states even offer an arrangement called net billing or net metering where they credit excess solar electricity you generate with your own system to other months where you consume more energy from the grid.

2. Wind

Wind is a good energy alternative choice for those who live in expansive land, have adequate wind sources and get a turbine high enough to at least 30 feet. Using wind energy has long been appreciated, ever since the Dutch invented the windmill many, many years ago. Wind energy has long evolved into using the available power to generate electricity on a small or industrial scale.

3. Micro-hydro electricity

Another viable source for an energy alternative option is micro-hydro electricity. If your home is near a running stream, this choice is the perfect one for you. Running water is the perfect energy alternative, since it constantly produces electricity as long as the water is active, unlike sunshine or wind, which can be intermittent. It generally is the most cost-effective way among the three mentioned energy alternative options.

Remember that these energy alternative choices are only effective if you and your family also change your attitudes towards power consumption. Develop good habits such as turning off the lights whenever they are not needed and using energy efficient lightbulbs and appliances. Using renewable energy can only go so far, and your attitude towards efficient and conservative energy use plays a huge part in saving on utility bills and helping the environment.
